Orthodontic FAQs

FAQs

Got a question about orthodontics? You’re not the only one. But you’ve come to the right place. At Angle House Orthodontics, our team of orthodontic professionals across North London love to talk about their work, and are always happy to answer any question you may have.

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about our work.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry which focuses on straightening teeth and jaws.

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist

An orthodontist has chosen to specialise in the field of orthodontics, which focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and jaws; a dentist focuses on the ongoing health of your teeth through regular check-ups.

How long will treatment take?

Orthodontic treatment usually takes 12-24 months but will vary according to how complex you case is. We will provide you with an indication of this in your bespoke treatment plan at your free consultation

If teeth need to be extracted who will do this?

Your own dentist will usually do this. Occasionally we will refer you to another specialist or an oral surgeon, but as orthodontists, tooth extractions are a last result. We prefer to use orthodontic appliances to move your teeth into position without the need for extractions.

Do braces hurt?

No, orthodontic treatment doesn’t hurt but there will be times during your treatment where you will experience some mild discomfort. After your braces or aligners have been fitted, and after each adjustment appointment when your braces are tightened, your teeth will likely be tender for three-to-five days. This can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relief.

How often will I need to see an orthodontist?

Once your brace has been fitted you will need to come in for an appointment once every six-to-eight weeks so we can check on the progress of your teeth and adjust your appliance.

Will I still need to see my regular dentist?

Yes. It is important to have regular check-ups with your regular dentist throughout orthodontic treatment. This is so that your teeth can be checked for decay and gums examined for signs of disease. We would also recommend regular visits to your hygienist.

Can anybody wear braces?

Yes! Although orthodontics is most successful when carried out in children whose teeth and bones are still actively growing, at Angle House Orthodontics, our specialist team of orthodontists can still achieve exceptional results for our adult patients

What will happen at the first appointment?

Your first appointment is free and will be a chance for us to assess your teeth to give you’re a recommended course of orthodontic treatment. Find out more about what happens during your first visit in our patient information section.

What types of braces do you offer?

At Angle House Orthodontics, we offer an extensive range of orthodontic appliances. This includes traditional metal braces and self-ligating braces, as well as more discreet options including clear braces, lingual braces and Invisalign aligners

Do you use Invisalign?

Yes, we are an experienced Invisalign provider and offer Invisalign for both teens and adults.

Will I need to wear another brace once my treatment has finished?

Once the active phase of your treatment has been finished, it will be necessary to wear a retainer. This appliance is designed to keep your teeth in their newly straightened position. Retainers are either removable or fixed behind your front teeth. Both are extremely discreet and comfortable.

If you have any other questions about orthodontics,we encourage you to book a free consultation at your nearest Angle House Orthodontics clinic and we can answer them in person.
