Dental Bridges

Bridge the gap between your teeth for a more beautiful smile.

We’re all destined to have a mouth full of teeth, but accidents happen, teeth grow in directions we don’t want them too, and poor health or genetic conditions can mean teeth need to be removed. This doesn’t mean you need to walk around with a hole in your mouth for the rest of your life. Rather, we can bridge the gap with a dental bridge.

What is a dental bridge?

If you are missing a tooth, a dental bridge can be used to fill the gap by holding an artificial tooth in place. A dental bridge slots over the natural teeth either side of your hole and holds the artificial tooth in position. The artificial tooth is made to match the same colour as your natural teeth so it’s no immediately obvious, if at all, that you are been fitted with a bridge.

How are dental bridges made?

Because a dental bridge requires the support of your teeth either side of the missing tooth, these existing teeth will need to be prepared to have the bridge fitted. This will require shaving off a fine layer of enamel from your natural teeth. This allows the bridge to slot over the top of your teeth.

To ensure we get the exact fit for your dental bridge, we will take impressions of your teeth using our orthodontic scanners. By analysing these precise impressions, we can see exactly how your bridge needs to be made to fit comfortably in your mouth.

Types of dental bridges

There are four types of dental bridges:

  1. Traditional dental bridges: these bridges have a fake tooth in the middle which sits into the gap where you are missing the tooth. This is held in place either side by dental crowns.
  2. Cantilever bridges: these bridges work in much the same way as traditional dental bridges do, but rather than being held in place by teeth on either side of the gap, cantilever bridges only require one support.
  3. Maryland bridges: these bridges use metal or porcelain structures to hold your artificial tooth in position. This makes them more noticeable but doesn’t require the surrounding teeth to be treated.
  4. Implant-supported braces: these bridges are a more suitable option if you have more than one tooth missing as they are held in place with dental implants.

At Angle House Orthodontics, our team are experienced in all types of dental bridges and can advise you on the best one for you.
